My All About Ramadan for Expats in Kuwait Post

Paris in Jail

Arab Times, Kuwait City, July 27, 2011: People caught eating, drinking, chewing gum or smoking in public during fasting hours in the holy month of Ramadan will be fined KD 100, imprisoned for one month or both, says acting Director of Public Relations and Moral Guidance Department at the Ministry of Interior Brigadier Ahmad Bader Al-Mulla. In a press statement Wednesday, Al-Mulla advised the public to fully abide by Law Number 44/1968, which prohibits eating and drinking in public during Ramadan fasting hours. He explained the above mentioned penalties are also applicable to those who provoke others to violate the law and the owners or managers of restaurants or food shops that operate during the fasting hours.

He added these establishments will be shutdown for maximum of two months, as stipulated in Article Two which gives the ministry power to close any restaurant or food shop proven to have violated the law. Al-Mulla pointed out the ministry is keen on strictly implementing the law in respect of the feelings of Muslims who fast during Ramadan. He called on the citizens and residents to comply with the law to avoid legal problems.

Mandatory Military Service For All Kuwait Citizens 18 Years and Above

US Military Image from Google

Arab Times, Kuwait City, July 26, 2011: Citizens who are 18 years and above will be recruited for compulsory military service, and the decision takes effect after Ramadan, reports Al-Shahid daily quoting reliable sources.

The same sources explained that the Fatwa and Legislation Department had carefully studied the new law, and the period of service for degree holders will be 6 months while those with other specifications will serve for a full year.

Sources added the new law is devoid of the lapses in the compulsory military service law of 1980 which the National Assembly voted in 2001 to suspend. The new law will contribute to the development of the military institution. Sources said the sole breadwinners of families, disabled people and rare cases will be exempted from service.

Does this mean Kuwaiti girls over 18 as well?

The Top 10 "It" Bags of Seasons Past and Present. Material Girls ~ What is your dream designer bag?

An "It-Bag" is a designer handbag that is deemed the "must-have" item of the moment as a result of a combination of celebrity usage, clever marketing techniques, superior quality and their ability to represent the mood of the season. They are generally produced in limited edition quantities.

These are the 10 "It" bags of seasons past and present, that the fashion insiders feel every handbag enthusiast should own, or at least know about.

E&TC ~ I would rather spend my $$$ on travel or jewelry than "it" bags.  Of course presents from your Hayati are always welcomed. ;P

Crazy for Birkins ~ Victoria Beckham

1. Hermes Birkin

The Hermès Birkin bag is named after the iconic actress Jane Birkin, who once had a highly public relationship with influential french singer, Serge Gainsbourg, to whom she bore a child (Charlotte Gainsbourg). The 'Birkin' is the symbol of ultimate luxury, due in part to its exposure on popular television shows such as 'Sex and the City'. An authentic 'Birkin' costs upwards of $9,000 and can have a waiting time of up to 2 years.  Finally Hermes is coming to Kuwait at the Al-Hamra tower! Kuwaiti women can afford them so I hope they do not have a ridiculous waiting list.

Link - How to buy a Birkin Bag Exposed!

The starting cost of an Hermes Birkin Bag is roughly $9,000 for a 25cm in leather and can go as high as $120,000 for a 40cm Croc with the palladium hardware emblazoned in diamonds.

E&TC ~ Victoria Beckham has a ridiculous collection of Birkin Bags.  Another famous without talent nobody that has them: Kim Kardashian.  If I was Hermes I wouldn't want them to represent. Just sayin'!

Kate Moss with her classic Chanel

2. Chanel 2.55 <3

This little classic will always be "in". It was born in 1955 (hence the name 2.55) after Coco Chanel decided she wanted a shoulder bag to free up her hands and is inspired py the quilting on Jockeys coats. Karl Lagerfeld released a second, updated version in 2006.

E&TC ~ This is my designer bag of choice (my favorite and I own several) because it's elegant, timeless and I wanted one for as long as I can remember. This lovely lady will run you around $5,200 and there is frequently a waiting list.  (Especially for the gold hardware which is classic Chanel.) The prices keeping going up! 20% every 6 months!

I prefer it in black caviar with silver hardware to stand the test of time and match most of my white gold jewelry.  Silver hardware is also youthful, less common in the Middle East and perfect for any occasion.  My second classic is in gold hardware and just gorgeous! I pair my classic Chanel bags with modern Chanel wallets to mix it up a bit.

Jenny McCarthy with her Chloe Paddington

3. Chloe Paddington

The Chloe Paddington was created by designer Phoebe Philo in 2005 and is considered to be the quintessential 'Boho-Chic' bag because of it's slouchy, unstructured shape and exposure by stars such as Kate Moss and Sienna Miller, who are known for their bohemian sense of style. A leather Paddington typically costs around $2,600.

Amanda Bynes looks cute with her Balenciaga

4. Balenciaga 'City' Motorcycle

Balenciaga's line of motorcycle-inspired handbags are created out of distressed goat leather, which is what gives them their unique, relaxed shape. The 'City' bag in particular, caused quite a stir after becoming the official handbag of choice for notorious fashionistas like Mary-Kate Olsen. The Balenciaga 'City' bag is not available online and retails for about $1,420.  (I like this in black and pink. :)

Me Likey! Sarah Jessica Parker looks adoreable with her Novak

5. Alexander McQueen Novak

The Alexander McQueen Novak represents the structured shapes of Fall 2005 and was inspired by Kim Novak, a vintage-era starlet who appeared in Alfred Hitchcock films. It's original run consisted of a mere 200 bags, which caused mass hysteria among handbag lovers everywhere and elevated the bag into permanent "It" status. Current cost is $2,195 and up. (Love it in pink on SJP!)

Hillary Duff with her Stam

6. Marc Jacobs Stam

The Marc Jacobs 'Stam' is named after the designers close friend, Canadian Supermodel, Jessica Stam. The bag features quilting and gold hardware similar to that of classic quilted Chanel bags, but differentiates itself with it's relaxed look, gusseted frame and kiss-lock closure. Practically everyone in Hollywood has one and it retails online for around $1,900.  (I don't like the copycat Chanel.)

Ashley Simpson and her Spy

7. Fendi Spy

The Fendi S/S 06 'Spy' Bag is priced starting at $2,800 and is a favorite of style stars like Hilary Duff and Linda Evangelista. It's notorious status is caused partly by it's enormous waiting list, which can last up to 3 years. (Not my style and you can't find jack &*%#! inside.)

KK & KK with her Muse

8. YSL Muse

The Yves Saint Laurent muse is a status bag of the highest quality. Crafted out of the finest embossed leather, this oversize structured tote features expertly minimalist gold hardware and is often carried by celebrities such as Katie Holmes, Lindsay Lohan, Kate Moss and Jessica Alba. They are often sold out and are priced starting around $1,800.  (Okay but nothing I would kill for... ;)

Jessica Simpson and her Gauffre

9. Prada Gauffre

One of the latest "It-bags" to hit the market is the Fall/Winter 06/07 Prada Gauffre. Victoria Beckham, Halle Berry, Beyonce and Madonna have all been photographed with theirs. It is made of Nappa leather and retails for $1,800-2,650. (Yucky! Can I have my $$$ back please?)

Ashley Olsen and her Speedy

10. Louis Vuitton Monogram Speedy 30

The Louis Vuitton Monogram Canvas Speedy 30 is more of a mainstay classic than a trend, but that doesn't stop it from maintaining "must-have" status all year round! Jessica Simpson carries hers practically every day. It is the ideal city bag, featuring a roomy interior with natural cowhide exterior and golden hardware. Price: $820. (LOL, her look is for Grandma only!)

Note: I am not a fashion blogger.  I do not want to follow every trend from Hollywood or the runway shows because it's just not my style or affordable. Travel is my passion and I would recommend all girls my age save their money to see the world.  However, receiving expensive bags as gifts from people you love and cherish is quite nice. ;)  My bag collection (thanks to my Kuwaiti sweetheart) is the envy of all my friends. ;P E&TC

Soul Surfer ~ Official Trailer

This is the movie I'm watching right now. I couldn't wait until it came to Kuwait so I could see it. What an inspirational story about following your dreams and never giving up. I highly recommend this film but grab your tissue girls. ;)

I love vacationing in Hawaii and watching the North Shore surfers in winter. One of my favorite memories is driving a convertible Ford Mustang (rented) from Wakiki beach to the North Shore with my Dad to watch the surfers ride the big waves.

Diva Alert on Camp Arifjan!

Google Images of Ms. Chaka Khan

This week the singer, Chaka Khan, was on Camp Arifjan to support the US troops in Kuwait.  According to my friends that were able to go to her "meet & greet" she was behaving like a true diva.  Ms. Khan thought Kuwait was too hot and her big hair was a "hot mess" with sweat dripping everywhere.  She wasn't too happy about signing autographs in the middle of July in Kuwait.

Chaka, I Feel For You girl. Thanks for stopping by...

Security ‘Tightens’ on Insulting Bloggers, Various Network Sites in Kuwait

GCID Closely Monitors Web to Protect Public

Arab Times, Kuwait City, July 19, 2011: The security authorities have stepped up measures to track down bloggers and Twitter users, who insult prominent personalities in the country on their websites and various social networking sites, reports Al-Dar daily quoting sources.

Sources explained this came after the authorities received complaints from a number of officials, religious leaders, businessmen, economists and politicians, among other alleged victims of moral defamation through the electronic media.

Sources disclosed the authorities have identified several bloggers and Twitter users engaged in such acts and they will be referred soon to the State Security Department for interrogation.

On claims that there is no law criminalizing the act of publishing offensive articles or statements on websites, sources clarified the state officials and security authorities do not tolerate those who malign others.

“Slandering the symbols of the state or any person is punishable by law regardless of the methods used to carry out such acts,” sources added.

Sources confirmed there is a section at the General Criminal Investigations Department (GCID) specialized in electronic crimes and it closely monitors websites to protect the public against those who do nothing but to insult others.

In a related development, a highly reliable source disclosed the Ministry of Interior has a series of extensive meetings with its communications ministry, during which they discussed ways to stop the publication of offensive statements and the proposal to block certain websites.

Beware of Black Magic!

Black Magic ~ Hugh Hefner's been a fan for years...

Arab Times, Kuwait City, July 17, 2011 : Police have arrested a young Kuwaiti man for allegedly practicing black magic and having sex with his victims, reports Alam Alyawm daily. The arrest came following a complaint filed by a divorced Kuwaiti woman accusing the man of having sex with her. The complainant said she met the magician in a chat room and he claimed to have powers to solve marital problems with her ex-husband. He then lured her to meet him in his apartment and ‘raped’ her. When police arrested the man he admitted to having sex with the woman. He added it is through inducing women to have sex with him he gets power to cure their ills. He has been referred to the authorities.

LUSH Fresh Handmade Cosmetics in Kuwait

I received this for my birthday but I wasn't impressed with the tiny size of their products.  I've never used LUSH before until my Superspoiler introduced me to their handmade, organic concept.

The box he gave me had this tiny sized tin moisturizer called Gorgeous.  I laughed because it was so small but after using it one time I fell in love.  I told him how much I liked it so the next day he went back to their store and bought me two of their largest size.

He also treated me to a few more items and I have to say that I'm really addicted to LUSH now.  Their products smell so good and make my skin look amazing.

My friends will know why he bought this for me. ;)

This and the honey soap has to be my favorite products from LUSH.  I've been using the moisturizer every night and my skin does look gorgeous. ;)

You can find LUSH at 360 and Olympia Mall in Kuwait.

The Devils Double - Official Movie Trailer

A chilling vision of the House of Saddam Hussein comes to life through the eyes of the man who was forced to become the double of Hussein's sadistic son.

I saw this movie trailer on my buddy's blog, BananaQ8 and I had to post it here. It looks pretty interesting and it's based on a true story.  I can't wait to see it on DVD since you know it will not show here in Kuwait.

Thanks Taz :*

CHANEL at Salhia Complex in Kuwait

Where your CHANEL dreams can come true...
Inside the lovely Salhia Complex

I don't think the Avenues luxury wing can compete with Salhia's understated elegance.

I helped my friend pick out her first Chanel purse (gift from her bf) and there is a waiting list for the new one that I want. :( Of course I didn't leave one of my favorite stores empty handed...

A happy CHANEL ending :)

Speak Kuwaiti

Speak and understand Arabic like a Kuwaiti.  There are 600 sentences and 1000 words inside the book.  From everyday conversation to the language of friendship.  This is a guide to Kuwaiti Arabic as it's really spoken.

This is the 1st Edition by K. Ahmad Ali published in 2011.

This book was a present from my Hayati who requested that I learn to speak some Kuwaiti before we get married.  This book is very helpful but I think I need to quit my job, hire a full time tutor and drink several bottles of wine. ;)

Ho Crackdown in Mahboula!

Google Images

My American girlfriend had an unfortunate encounter with the Police in Mahboula last week. Her rental car company sent an Indian guy to her building at night to return her car after service. She met him outside and since it was so hot they sat inside the car together with it running to discuss what all was serviced on her car. Well the humidity must have fogged up her windows because when the police drove by they immediately pulled up to her car and startled both my friend and the poor little Indian guy.

She said they both jumped out of her car and so did the police. Their police lights were on so her Haras and building manager came out of the building to see what was going on. Everyone was staring at her like she was a prostitute. This is exactly what the police must have thought about her.

She tried to explain but they kept demanding her Civil ID. The rental car guy had his inside his wallet but her ID was inside her apartment. Thank goodness the passenger policeman spoke English enough so she could explain the situation. She said everyone was laughing in the end.

Just a Hint: If you see an expat lady in a rental car reviewing paperwork by her building she is NOT a hooker. The hookers are the Chinese girls standing on the corner around A&G wearing slutty clothes, stripper shoes and loads of makeup.

You poor thing. :( Thanks for letting me post this. Hilarious!

Comfort Food

I love breakfast from Morin' & Evenin' Restaurant.  Having some coffee and chocolates from Godiva and Rohr while we wait on his driver.

Godiva's that he gave me for my birthday in June. They had leftover bunnies and chicks from Easter.

My second box from Rohr Swiss Chocolates located at Olympia Mall in Salmiya. Yummy!
