Getting To Know You

Greetings from Kuwait! The land of dust, heat and hummus ;P

I was curious if I had regular readers from around the world.  I would love it if you would comment and introduce yourself. :)  You can stay anonymous if you would like.  Just tell me where you are from (city, state & country) and how often you read this blog.  You can even send a photograph to expatandthecity@gmail.com and I will add it to this post.

I saw another blogger a while back who asked his readers to send pictures of his blog on their computers.   The photographs were really cool and he had a collection from all over the world.  So please feel free to do that or send whatever you would like.  Be sure to ask me any questions you might have about my life in Kuwait or living here.

I would love to hear from you so please don't be shy and introduce yourself.

I'm Suffering from a MASSIVE ATTACK of PMS!

Warning: this post is not for the guys!

PMS via the Urban Dictionary ~ A powerful spell that women are put under about once every month, which gives them the strength of an ox, the stability of a Window's OS, and the scream of a banshee. Basically, man's worst nightmare.

OMFG! SHE HAS PMS!!! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!!

*explosions and screams*

I am seriously out of control with my PMS cravings. I just can't stop stuffing the chocolate in my mouth and then going for the salty carbs. My lovely complexion was just invaded with an oil slick and pimples. Yeah, I'm a total FOX!

*crying, then hysterically laughing*

My behavior this week is totally out of character for me. Everyone is getting on my nerves and if he tells me one more time how gorgeous I am (while it's my time of the month) I'm going to slap his face off! (Sorry for the crazy talk.) He's not even afraid of me this time of the month. I swear on my life that he actually said, "You are so adorable on your period and I look forward to it every month." WTF? Well this month is different and I'm going to kill him.

Can you get away with murder in Kuwait and claim temporary PMS insanity? Well, you can in America.

Please don't hold this post against me. For some reason I am having a really bad one this time.  I realize how lucky I am to have someone in my life that is practically perfect.  I am just feeling so guilty for being this moody and dramatic.  I will probably delete this post in the morning after I've had my coffee fix with...Godiva’s. Maybe if I slap one of my coworkers it will make me feel better? *BIG smile* :D

5 Diet Myths and What You Can Learn from Them

I found this interesting article for my sweetheart and thought I would share it with my readers.  It seems like a lot of bloggers and my friends are on diets.  I really enjoy reading about fellow bloggers 'cheat meals' or food fantasies.  Fahad and Mark are some of my favorites! Of course nothing beats Just Noon and her delicious food posts.  Let's not forget that Cheeky Knickers is sugar free! (All bloggers mentioned are in my Friendly Fire picks.)

5 Diet Myths and What You Can Learn from Them

By Michelle May, M.D.

Diets are filled with rules about when, what, and how much to eat. While “the rules” may make sense on the surface, unless you understand why you do certain things, you’ll break the rules as soon as the temptation is greater than your motivation.

Let’s examine some of these myths, where they come from, and how to make long term changes that work for you.

Myth 1: Don’t Eat After 7pm

Your metabolism doesn’t shut off at 7:01 pm so why is this rule so common? Many people who struggle with their weight overeat in the evening after dinner so they aren’t snacking because they’re hungry. They’re snacking because they’re bored, watching television, rewarding themselves, or feeling lonely.

Rather than using a temporary rule to address those habits, when you feel like eating in the evenings, ask, “Am I hungry?” If you’re truly hungry, eat, keeping in mind that your day is winding down so you don’t need a big meal. If you aren’t hungry, think about why you feel like eating anyway and come up with a better way to address that need. Ken, a man in one of our Am I Hungry? Mindful Eating workshops, realized he was just bored so he started doing stained glass to entertain himself while he watched TV.

Myth 2: Eat Small Meals Every 3 Hours

This rule is based on the fact that many people who don’t struggle with weight issues tend to eat frequent small meals. However, they don’t check their watch to tell them when it’s time to eat; they eat when they’re hungry and stop when they’re satisfied. Since that tends to be a small-ish meal, they get hungry again in a few hours.

Instead of watching the clock, begin to tune in to the physical symptoms of hunger and fullness to tell you when to eat and when to stop. Your stomach is about the size of your fist so it only holds a couple of handfuls of food comfortably. By relearning to trust your body’s signals, you can learn to follow a frequent small meal pattern naturally.

Myth 3: Don’t Let Yourself Get Hungry

A corollary to myth 2, this rule is based on the belief that overweight people are incapable of controlling themselves when they’re hungry. In my experience with thousands of Am I Hungry? Mindful Eating workshop participants, the opposite is true. Once people learn to tell the difference between physical hunger and head hunger, they begin to meet each need more appropriately. Perhaps the rule should be “Don’t let yourself get too hungry” since it’s harder to make conscious choices when you’re starving.

Myth 4: Follow Your Diet Six Days a Week Then You Can Have a Cheat Day

Hmmm…what if you were a harsh, overly strict parent six days a week then completely ignored your kids every Saturday? It doesn’t make sense to try to be perfect Sunday through Friday while obsessing about everything you’re going to eat on your “day off.” Then when Saturday comes, you overeat just because you’re allowed to so you end up feeling miserable all day. Personally, I’d rather enjoy eating a little of the foods I love every day, mindfully and in moderation.

Myth 5: Carbs are Bad… or Fat is Bad… or ______ is Bad

“Good food, bad food” thinking can lead to feelings of deprivation, cravings, overeating, and guilt. All foods can fit into a healthy diet using the principles of balance, variety, and moderation to guide you. Use nutrition information as a tool, not a weapon.

Truth:

A sustainable personal approach trumps short term rules. Rather than walking a tight rope that you’ll fall off of sooner or later, dig a little deeper to better understand why, when, what, how, and how much you eat. You’ll gradually create a more flexible, personalized approach to making decisions that both nourish and nurture you.

Your thoughts....

Did you, or do you, buy in to any of these myths?

Happy Easter

Bunny photo from Google images

HAPPY EASTER KUWAIT and may God bless you and yours!

My Daddy after fishing with Pete :D

The men in my family usually fish on Easter before we have the big family Easter dinner. I think every photograph of my Father on this blog features one of his many red ice chests! I am missing my family so much but at least someone special here in Kuwait is looking after me so I don't feel homesick.

Look what the Kuwaiti Easter Bunny brought me from Godvia and Laduree :D I'm also getting another spa weekend.  Thank you Easter Honey Bunny :*

These dark chocolates are amazing! I'm trying not to eat them all because I don't want a chocolate belly for summer.

I made him promise to stop buying me such big boxes of chocolate but when I saw how cute the Godiva Easter collection was I wished I had kept my big mouth shut. ;P

Isn't this little chocolate Easter Bunny sweet?

Getting Away For the Weekend in Kuwait

How do you getaway for the weekend in Kuwait? Well my girlfriends and I decided to stay at the Hilton Hotel in Mangof and visit their spa and beach facilities. It's a mini vacation without having to fly anywhere. Some of us were surprised by our sweethearts and treated for our weekend under the Kuwaiti sun.

We chose the Hilton because of their lovely beach and pool. Their breakfast is delicious and their spa has several relaxing treatments to choose from. Even though the Hilton is an older hotel it's very comfortable and friendly for Westerners. You are free to wear shorts and any style bathing suit you would like. Even some of the Kuwaiti girls wear bikinis and we saw them tanning in the sun.

For maximum comfort we chose our own, separate rooms in the main building. My view was overlooking the pool and the beach on the Arabian Gulf. My room was the Queen Deluxe Plus room with a bed that made you feel like you were sleeping on a cloud.

On our last day the reception surprised us with great news. They gave us a very late checkout until 6 PM. Their hotel and spa staff treated us like princesses and my next spa weekend away is already booked for May.

Karate Ace Filipina Foils Kidnap Bid by 2 School Students

ARAB TIMES, KUWAIT CITY, April 20, 2011: Police have arrested two students of a private high school from Farwaniya for attempting to kidnap Filipino woman, reports Al-Rai daily.

This happened when the woman was on her way to work. The students attempted to kidnap the woman but to their bad luck the woman turned out to be a karate expert. She reportedly taught both men a lesson they will never forget.

The woman then followed the students and waited until they entered the school and called police. With permission from the school administration the cops searched for the two students and arrested them.
