Fish Eyes

Whenever I'm on Camp Arifjan I usually grab lunch and visit the exchange to pick up some groceries.  One thing that I've noticed is how many American women are wearing false eyelashes to work in Kuwait.  I always thought they were for special occasions and not everyday appropriate.  Rarely do I see well applied lashes or anything close to a natural looking application.  They usually look like Rue Paul or 'street candy'.  I can see the glue from a few feet away and their eyes look irritated.  They wear the kind that stay on for a week or so and after a few days they just look jacked-up.

The only tool I use to enhance my eyelashes is dark brown or black mascara when I go out at night or for special occasions.  Mine are naturally curly so I do not have to use an eyelash curler.  I had to wear false eyelashes a few times in the past and I didn't like the way they looked or felt.  I have large, almond shaped, blue eyes and they made me look like my eyes were bigger than my face (Fish Eyes).

The only time I have ever seen them look attractive is on celebrities walking the red carpet or on some Kuwaiti women.  Kuwaiti women have dark, lovely, doe eyes and they look beautiful when they wear natural looking makeup.  I've yet to see them look good on any American woman working on the US Camps in Kuwait.

How False Eye Lashes Can Cause More Damage Than Good for Young Girls

There are millions of women who wear false eyelashes, because they feel that are enhance their looks in some way. Nowadays it seems that this trend is being picked up by more and more young girls. They watch their favorite celebrites on television or read about their beauty secrets in a magazine and suddenly decide that it is the way for them to go. What many of these young women don't realize is that they could actually be doing a lot of damage to their eyes. In order to get the eyelashes to stay in place there is some type of chemical that gets them to stay on. This chemical when even when used properly can cause some type of reaction especially in young girls. This is according to some pediatricians who have had to treat young girls who wanted to play dress up.

Some young girls will even try to put makeup on top of the false eyelashes in order to really make them stand out. In many cases young girls have ended up getting the makeup in their eyes instead of just on the eyelash or the eyelash will fall into their eye. Besides when you're young you really don't need all of those additional items in order to make yourself look good? There are many women who feel that false eyelashes just look ridiculous on some people. The growing group of teenage girls who feels that this makes them more attractive usually gets the idea for movies or magazines. You can however help your daughter appreciate her own beauty. I spoke to some mothers who felt that their daughters just would not fully understand the dangers than tare associated with false eyelashes. They then choose to have their daughters speak to a doctor on the subject. The doctor then showed them what harm wearing false eyelashes on a daily basis can do to the eyes. Of course the pictures that they showed them were based on the long term affects of wearing false eyelashes daily for more than four hours.

Of course there is nothing wrong with wearing them once in a while for a special occasion when they are older, but they may want to think twice about wearing them when they are young.

Please Don't Shoot Me

Yesterday I was driving home from work and found myself in the middle of a parade of Kuwaiti men in cars celebrating what I believe was a wedding party.  I had just hung up the phone after talking to my friend,
the “Shy Guy" when I took a turn on a side street close to my building.  I was blocked by all the oncoming traffic and couldn't move my car.  Then this Kuwaiti guy jumps out of his SUV and starts shooting in the air directly in front of my car.  It scared me to death and the bullet cases came very close to hitting the hood of my car.  I didn't know what was happening at first and I sort of panicked.  I just froze and didn't move.  I wasn't impressed with how I handled the situation.  I went into shock at first because I thought he was going to shoot at me.

He quickly jumped back into his SUV and all I could do was call my friend back and tell him what happened.  He explained that this was illegal in Kuwait but some Kuwaitis still do it.  Just hearing his voice calmed me down enough to ignore all the guys following the shooter who were shouting and blowing their horns.  I just drove home like nothing happened.

You just never know what will happen when you live in Kuwait.  That is exactly why I love living here.

The Joy of Swimming

This morning I woke up very early to beautiful Kuwait weather. After enjoying my morning coffee with a light breakfast I took a quick shower and slipped into my most comfortable swimsuit that Mom sent me. I grabbed the essentials: sunglasses, cover-up, sandals, cell phone, travel pillow, two towels, iPod, girlie mags, suntan lotion, my favorite hat and a small ice chest with water and mini icepack.

When I arrived at my swimming pool the water was clean and the pool area was completely empty. I was hoping that it would be since most residents are either sleeping or at work. I timed myself for a thirty minute intense workout swimming laps. My reward was to spend the rest of the morning playing in the pool and reading while I lay out in the warm sun.

This early morning swim helped relieved my stress, started my day with a good source of cardio and gave me a healthy dose of vitamin D.

The best part of my swim was there was no sign of Billy Bob. :D

What Are the Benefits of Swimming for Women?

A body of water provides multiple avenues for exercise--swimming, walking, aerobics and resistance training are all examples of water routines that build strength and burn calories while providing women with an effective workout. Swimming is a full-body exercise that utilizes, strengthens and tones major muscle groups within a woman's body.

Builds Cardiovascular Endurance

Swimming places high demand on the heart and the lungs, improving and strengthening cardiovascular functioning. Strong lungs improve oxygen transport to the cells and muscles throughout a woman's body. The more efficient and effective the lungs become, the easier breathing becomes during swimming and other modes of exercise. Increasing cardiovascular endurance contributes to higher calorie expenditure and increases in exercise duration and intensity. Swimming strengthens a woman's heart, helping lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels while lowering the risk of stroke and heart disease.

Provides Low-Impact Exercise

According to the Bucknell University Athletic Department, the body is 90 percent buoyant when submerged in water. For example, when a woman jogs in the pool, only 10 percent of her body weight is experiencing impact. Swimming protects the joints from high-impact movements, such as pounding and bouncing, that are common during running or other land activities. Swimming is a smart exercise choice for women with osteoporosis, a disease that renders bones brittle and weak. According to the National Women's Health Information Center, women are more susceptible to osteoporosis than men. Water activities provide a low-impact workout for women who have weak bones and joints without compromising their health.

Challenges the Muscles

The Bucknell University Athletic Department reports that exercising in water provides the body with 12 percent to 14 percent more resistance than when exercising on land. As a result, a woman burns a high number of calories while she is exercising in the water and she is constantly using her leg and arm muscles to propel her forward. In conjunction with the two weekly strength training sessions recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine, swimming builds muscle tone, strength and endurance in the core, upper and lower body. Additionally, consistent water resistance protects the muscles from sudden quick or jerky movements often associated with injury during a workout.

Eases Exercise Difficulties During Pregnancy

Since women are mostly buoyant while swimming, pregnant women may be more comfortable exercising in water than on land. Improvements in muscular strength and oxygen efficiency may ease the challenges of labor and will help a woman's lungs deliver oxygen effectively to her baby. Swimming may lower stress levels and anxiety experienced during pregnancy. The Baby Center reports that swimming may help women sleep better and empower women to deal with psychological and physical challenges associated with pregnancy.

Can I Live a Healthy Lifestyle in Kuwait?

Yes, I can if I chose to do so.

If you read my blog you know that I don't have the best eating habits in the world.  I spend a lot of time at my job and I do not have a regular exercise routine.  My biggest excuse for not eating healthy is my lack of time to cook in Kuwait.  I go out to eat a lot at night and lunch at work usually consists of fast food or coffee with no lunch at all.  I don't need to lose weight but what I do need is to feel more energized and healthy.  This junk food is making me feel tired and irritable.  I saw a documentary on television about the negative effects of fast food and I can't get it out of my mind.  The products most of these companies use are disgusting and not even meant for human consumption.  Kuwait has become a fast food hub for all of the unhealthy, American restaurants from back home.  A few people are getting rich by helping Kuwait become obese and diabetic.  I know that each individual is responsible for their own food choices but anyone in Kuwait can look around and see how all of these unhealthy, American restaurants are influencing the dietary choices of Kuwait.

With my busy schedule I'm taking baby steps to achieve my fitness and health goals.  I'm pretty happy with my body but I know that what I do now will affect me when I get older.  I am researching the Internet on simple ways to improve my health and well being.  I am also giving myself the freedom to cheat from time to time so that I do not get discouraged and quit.

10 Ways to Improve Your Health in 1 Minute or Less

We worry about big health issues like heart problems or cancer, but sometimes it seems like our efforts to prevent them are few and far between. Fear not – there are simple and quick things you can do keep yourself feeling healthy and relaxed.

#1 - Kick Start Your Day with Flowers

While daily routines can deflate our energy level and outlook on life before the weekend even arrives, research shows that relief is as close as the nearest florist, or grocery store. According to a recent study at Rutgers University, flowers promote long-term, positive effects on our energy and mood, and can even reduce depression and anxiety.

#2 - Get Cozy with Your Man / Woman ~  ;P

New research suggests getting cozy with your man or woman will earn you more than just brownie points. Anything from a quick snuggle, to getting busy between the sheets will do the trick, a recent study in Psychosomatic Medicine suggests. For every cuddly minute, cortisol, the hormone our body releases in response to stress, is reduced by seven percent. So go ahead and get close, it does your body good.

#3 - Eat Dark Chocolate (YES!!!)

Eying up that dark chocolate bar in your kitchen pantry? No guilt needed, according to a recent study at Northumbria University in Britain. Full of flavanols, which help to increase blood flow to the brain, and flavonoids, which help our body repair damage and fight toxins, chocolate can improve memory, fight fatigue, and aid the body in mentally challenging tasks.

#4 - Turn Up the Tunes :D

Next time you find yourself crawling the walls in a stressful situation, slip on your headphones and turn up the tunes. According to a recent study at Cleveland Clinic, music can slow the neuronal firings deep within the brain, lowering your blood pressure and stress level.

# 5 - Have a Laugh

When it comes to stress, laughter really is the best medicine. Shown to boost our energy level, reduce pain, improve immune function, and relieve tension, giggly behavior is the perfect anecdote. “Get a silly screen saver. Rent a funny movie when you get home. Stop taking things so seriously!” says Alice Domar, Ph.D., director of the Mind/Body Center for Women's Health at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

# 6 - Take a Brisk Walk with your Pooch

Man’s best friend is more than just a companion these days. Taking a quick romp around the block is a great way to give your legs a little exercise, and also elevate your levels of serotonin and dopamine, the nerve transmitters that have pleasurable and calming properties, says Blair Justice, PhD, a psychology professor at the University of Texas School of Public Health.

# 7 - Take a Deep Breath

Who knew improving our health and happiness is just a breath away? From better digestion, fitness, and mental health to improved energy and relaxation, deep breathing goes hand-in-hand with a healthy lifestyle. So go ahead, breathe in…and exhale…

# 8 - An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away

These nutrient rich fruits are a major asset to any diet, and pack quite a punch in the health department. Full of antioxidants, fiber, and flavonoids, apples help to support a healthy heart, and keep your LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels under control.

# 9 - Enjoy a Glass of Wine ~ Homemade if your in Kuwait ;P

Looking for an excuse to tip back some chardonnay? According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, one glass of wine daily can increase the amount of omega-3 fatty acids in our blood, aiding our body against inflammation and improving the health of our arteries. Cheers to that!

# 10 - Show Me Your Pearly Whites

There’s nothing quite like a smile to light up a room, and fight stress, according to a recent study at Columbia University. When you feel your nerves tighten and the grip of anxiety upon you, take a second and smile, “if you can slow your breathing down and change your expression, you may be able to turn around the stress cascade,” explains Mark Stibich, PhD, a consultant at Columbia University.

Whipped Cream Dream

Today I have a craving for whipped cream.  I brought my half empty can to work in my lunch cooler so I could spray a hug glob on top of my morning coffee.  I also packed fresh strawberries from the Lulu center to enjoy with my breakfast.

To my co-workers amusement I kept spraying the can of whipped cream in my mouth while running around the office.  We have a relaxed atmosphere here in Kuwait and I didn't think it was obnoxious, office behavior.  Okay, maybe a tad trailer trash but running into Billy Bob in the elevator is starting to rub off on me.  Since I was a little girl I would grab the whipped cream can out of the fridge and spray it into my mouth.  Mom caught me more than once and she gave my little fanny a good slap or two.

Well, hopefully nobody from work is reading this blog or I just gave myself away. At least I don't floss my teeth at my desk like a certain somebody I work with...!

What's your favorite way to eat whipped cream?

Fat Boys Last Long Time

The Fatter the Man, the Better the Sex

by Sasha Brown-Worsham

Ladies, if you've been putting your hubby on a diet, you may want to rethink that plan. Turns out?

Fat men are better in bed.

Researchers at Erciyes University in Kayseri, Turkey, studied body mass index (BMI) and male sexual performance and discovered that fat men have better staying power than their slimmer counterparts. No joke.

Heavier men have sex for 7.3 minutes on average (what a treat!), while thinner men hold on for ... wait for it ... wait for it ...108 seconds.

Bring on the bacon, baby.

Seriously, this is insane. Do I want my husband to last longer and possibly die while he's inside me, or do I want him to last less than two minutes and never give me what I came for (pun intended)?

A dilemma of the highest magnitude.

Aesthetically, fat men are no great shakes. Sorry Drew Carey. I just can't do it. I love a cut man whose body shows the work he puts in at the gym. I like a man who looks fit and healthy and trim.

Here in the United States, where so many people (nearly 67 percent, in fact) have an unhealthy body mass, this news must be welcome.

Of course, it also raises the question: Is staying power really what defines "good in bed"? I daresay that definition would be different for every woman, but for me, it has a lot more to do with a combination of confidence, intelligence, and a willingness to explore. To each their own, though.

People who want sex to go long should look for fat guys. Maybe Peter Paul Rubens had the right idea after all. So, let's all get fat and have hours of sex! We may have heart attacks and not live to 35, but at least we'll have tons of good sex first!

Another article on the same research subject:

Sex researchers: "Size" does matter

By Judy Mandelbaum

Study shows that fatter men last longer in bed. Should Americans rejoice?
Fat is fun! At least, that's the word from Turkey this week. Researchers at Erciyes University in Kayseri have just completed a yearlong study correlating body mass index (BMI) and male sexual performance. Their findings: Men with excess body fat last longer in bed. In fact, heavier men were able to make love for an average of 7.3 minutes, while slender men could count themselves lucky if they held on for a mere 108 seconds.

The reason? Female hormones. Men with excess fat showed higher levels of the female estradiol sex hormone. This substance apparently disrupted their bodies' natural "male" neurotransmitter chemicals and slowed their progression towards orgasm. Ironically, the less masculine their bodies appeared, the better lovers they proved to be.

The scientists compared the BMI and sexual performance of over 100 men who were being treated for sexual dysfunction with 100 other males who lasted longer during sex. They found that men suffering from premature ejaculation were on the whole thinner and fitter than their "better endowed" brethren.

Using the researchers' logic, you might think that American men, living in what the World Health Organization has identified as the world's third fattest country with an estimated 66.7 percent of the population living well over the line, would be the world's most exquisite lovers. Unfortunately, the study does not take a stand on this issue. Nor is there any scientific or anecdotal evidence to suggest that it is true. In fact, last year the global research website conducted a survey of 15,000 women from 20 countries on the subject, and Americans showed up fifth from the bottom for being "too rough." (Spaniards, Brazilians and Italians took top honors.) But as Benjamin Disraeli supposedly said, "There are lies, damn lies, and statistics."

This is not to deny that, when it comes to overweight lovers, there may also be an issue of "quality vs. quantity" involved, not to mention aesthetic and cardiological issues etc., but why spoil a good story? For now, make sure your next love banquet includes plenty of chips and beer, bratwursts and pecan pies. Nowadays, when it comes to sex, fat is the new thin.

Adventures in Kuwait with Billy Bob

Since I've moved into my own apartment in Kuwait my home life has completely changed. It's nice to have my own personal space and privacy. There is no more Miss Piggy so my kitchen is always clean and inviting. Not that I cook that much with my schedule but I do make a mean cup of coffee, pancakes, brownies and grilled cheese sandwiches.

My new building is full of American males who work for several companies here in Kuwait. Most of them are friendly and we always speak in the elevator or when I take out my trash. And then there is this redneck guy that I have nicknamed Billy Bob. Billy Bob is all up in my business and working my nerves. He seems like a nice man but he doesn't have a clue about living in Kuwait.

Billy Bob quotes:

"Let me know when you are going to the pool so I can come visit." (I think I'd rather drown first.)

"You are very white and I bet ya turn pink in the sun. I’m famous for my good suntan lotion massage if you’re interested. I'm messing with ya darlyn, you could be my daughter” (Try Granddaughter old fool.)

"Watch out for them Arab guys in dresses cuz they love you blonde, white girls." (Idiot!)

"Our Kuwaiti maintenance guy is a lazy SOB." (Uh, he is not Kuwaiti Billy Bob, he is called the Haras and originally from Egypt.)

Well, Billy Bob isn't such a bad guy but he can get on my nerves in a matter of seconds. I dread riding in the elevator with him and I pray to just see a little less of him in my new building.

Modern Day Cinderella

Whenever something bad happens in your life it's important to have your friends and loved ones around you for support. This is when you find out who is truly there for you no matter what. I'm very fortunate because I came to Kuwait alone and my family lives in the USA. I've managed to make friends with a lovely group of girls that are my Kuwait family. We are always there for each other during the good times and the bad. Girls night out, shopping, coffee shops, the seaside, weekend getaways, financial stress, illness, falling in love, broken hearts, feeling homesick and missing our families.

Having a man in your life that adores you is always a bonus. Someone who makes you feel like a Princess when you just came home from work where a sandstorm kicked your ass. You have sand in everything from your windblown, long, blonde hair to your new, pink, Victoria Secret panties. It's wonderful to have a man who cherishes you and is willing to take care of you in every way.

I feel in the year 2010 women should be able to take care of themselves. I'm not talking about total equality or women paying on dates. There is nothing more attractive than a gentleman. What I mean is that when the guy of your dreams offers to support you financially (car, house, etc.) unless he is your husband you shouldn’t accept but learn to stand on your own two feet. It's always nice to receive a genuine offer from someone you really care about but a modern day Cinderella should always take care of herself. Of course, romantic gifts, dinners and travel is certainly okay in my book ;P

Having a man love you for your physical appearance, intelligence, personality and sense of humor is wonderful but taking care of yourself will win his respect and give you a sense of pride.

Ever After is one of my favorite Drew Barrymore Movies.  When I was a young girl I saw the film in NYC.  After the movie ended everyone stood and clapped in the theater.  If you haven't seen it I highly recommend that you do.

The Kuwaiti Shy Guy

I <3 the Shy Guy.  Cute ones are very rare but every once in a while you meet one who is just so sweet and irresistible.  In a world full of obnoxious players I want all the Shy Guys to know how special they are...

This hug is for you and you know who you are Shy Guy :D

Chocolate Glazed Donuts are MIA at Kripsy Kreme in Kuwait

My favorite donut at Krispy Kreme is the very popular Chocolate Glazed. To my horror *screams* I went to Krispy Kreme last night to pick up one dozen of donut heaven but they were out. Not only were they out but the Filipino hostess informed me that Krispy Kreme Kuwait has discontinued this world famous flavor for a new donut. The new donut has caramel drizzled all over the top which she proclaimed was even better because it was sweeter. Uh, sweeter than chocolate glazed? No thank you! That is too freaking sweet for my taste and is a sure ticket to diabetes.

I'm broken hearted Krispy Kreme Kuwait. Please do not discontinue my favorite flavor that is one of your biggest sellers. Please bring back the Chocolate Glazed donut!

September 11, 2001 Remembered

I will never forget the morning of September 11, 2001.  I was home sick and sleeping in my bed when my Father came in my room and woke me up.  His eyes were wide and I could tell something was wrong.  He told me a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center and quickly turned on my little television to Fox News.  We sat on the edge of the bed and he told me he suspected terrorists because of the previous attack.  That's when the second plane hit and my Father looked at me with rage and said get dressed and meet me downstairs, America is under attack.

There were a total of 2,996 deaths, including the 19 hijackers and 2,977 victims. The victims were distributed as follows: 246 on the four planes (from which there were no survivors), 2,606 in New York City in the towers and on the ground, and 125 at the Pentagon. All the deaths in the attacks were civilians except for 55 military personnel killed at the Pentagon. More than 90 countries lost citizens in the attacks on the World Trade Center.

“Time is passing. Yet, for the United States of America, there will be no forgetting September the 11th. We will remember every rescuer who died in honor. We will remember every family that lives in grief. We will remember the fire and ash, the last phone calls, the funerals of the children.

“Our enemies have made the mistake that America’s enemies always make. They saw liberty and thought they saw weakness. And now, they see defeat."

My Eid Surprise

Last night after work the girls and I went out for a lovely dinner.  We had such a good time and I'm very lucky to have met such a fun group of interesting friends here in Kuwait.  While at dinner I received an email on my BlackBerry that I had to call a number to arrange delivery for my Eid gift.  I was shocked because I couldn't imagine who would send me a gift for Eid this way.  I called the number and it was a local candy shop that asked me for my address and a time for delivery.  One of the girls insisted for safety reasons I use her brothers address for the delivery.  I think she just wanted to hijack my gift, looool.  On the way home from dinner I followed her to his apartment and picked up my gift.

This is what I received from another Kuwaiti blogger who wants to remain anonymous:

Thank you so much for my sweet gift Mr. M.  I've been snacking on them all day and they are delicious!

Happy Eid :*

Obama Gets Fresh in Kuwait

One of my friends found this car, air freshener at Ace Hardware over the weekend.  This is not something you would expect to find in Kuwait.  Loooool.

Thanks Ms. R :*

Will He Marry Me? Uhhhh...NO!

The girls and I know a Canadian girl who sometimes hangs out with us. Her only topic of conversation is dieting and her Local boyfriend. She asked our opinion on her relationship with her boyfriend this weekend and then she became upset when we all told her the truth. Well, she asked for it and we all told her our honest opinion.

The facts: Jess is a teacher who came here over a year ago. She is sweet and cute. She dated this Local guy off and on for a while and she is completely in love obsessed with him. The problem is that she is under the delusion that he will marry her. From what she told us I don't think there is any hope for her but I hope I'm wrong. She seems fragile and that her life here revolves only around him. It is obvious to all of us that he is just using her and her story really made me feel sorry for her.

She keeps repeating the same stuff every time we hang out. She is a friend of a friend and honestly we don't like it when she hangs out with us because she asks for advice but never takes it. She is a real downer and her path is leading straight to self-destruction.

She is worried that he will not end up marrying her because she wasn't a virgin when she met him, she dated other Local guys and he knows about it, she is older (late twenties), she is sleeping with him before marriage, and she doesn't share his religion.

Not a good guy: Her Local boyfriend is in and out of her life. He makes her pay for almost everything and he rarely takes her out. He wants to spend all of their time together in her apartment. It sounds like he leaves her when he gets bored with her. His excuse, "His family will never accept her". He just dumps her and then after some time he will return with promises to marry her. All so he can sleep with her again. She has taken him back several times and he always dumps her with the "family excuse".

This weekend she was a neurotic mess because he wasn't texting or calling like he normally does. She is afraid he will dump her again. She literally lives in fear he will leave her. She kept talking about marrying him and converting to his faith. It's clear he will say anything to her when he wants to come back for fun.

Bex wants to have her confined to a mental hospital because she is suffering from delusions. Little k wants to beat some sense into her. The rest of us just hope she will wake up and move on. We all gave her our honest opinion knowing she will not listen to our advice. She became defensive and then started talking about how they were going to get married. Uhhhhhhh...I don't think that will happen unless Hell freezes over but I really hope I am wrong.

If you are a Local Guy please comment and let us know your thoughts. Thank you. :)
