New Policy Aims at Preventing Kuwaitis from Marrying Foreigners

Panel eyes higher grants to overcome dowries problem

Arab Times, Kuwait City, Nov 14, 2010: In an attempt to discourage Kuwaitis from marrying foreigners and other Arabs abroad, the Committee for Limiting Kuwaiti Marriages Abroad has drafted a new policy whereby such marriages will be certified only if the Kuwaiti is 21 years of age or older, reports Al-Qabas daily.

Informed sources said the committee, which was formed by justice minister, is planning to submit a comprehensive report to the Cabinet suggesting Kuwaitis who marry their compatriots within the country be granted higher grants in order to overcome the problem of high dowries.

Sources said the committee will coordinate with neighboring countries to benefit from their experiences in this regard. The committee is also against the extending of minimum marriageable age limit for girls in the country and wants to curb the phenomenon of ‘Kuwaiti-foreigner marriages.’ Sources say representatives of the ministries of Justice, Interior and Foreign Affairs will hold a meeting this month to discuss some important proposals in this regard.

If you fell in love and wanted to marry a foreigner would this stop you?

  1. They always blame it on the foreign women. If they would raise their daughters to be proper wives instead of runway models who expect high dowries, a new house ande new car maybe they would stay together. Teach them to cook and clean and appreciate what the husband can give them instead of complaining and running home to momma. Teach their sons to stop being sex crazed pigs and cheaters then things might be better.

UAE gives all kinds of money and benefits when their marry their own kind. The foreign women who marry nationals don't get nationality so easily either which discourages certain types of women looking for another nationality. They would never blame the high divorce rate on themselves which leaves the blame on the foreign women. Let people choose their spouse for love instead of a business deal between families. I know if I only met my husband on our wedding day and turned out not to like it I would divorce him and vice versa. I've been to a Kuwaiti wedding of a 17 year old girl who was the only girl in a family of 8 and she met her husband that day. He turned out to be a mulla ( religious man )with a big huge beard.

Give the people a right to choose who they love. Let them get engaged and know each other before jumping in to marriage. Don't blame the foreign women for the divorces.

  2. I believe that two people should only marry for true love and after they know each other for better or worse. What country they come from shouldn't matter at all.

  3. Believe me Expat, experts & MPs produce tons & tons of proposals for various issues, yet very few see light at the end of the tunnel. In fact, nothing has stopped Kuwaitis from marrying foreigners. Indeed, the GCC countries made several attempts to woo their citizens from marrying foreigners as Crazy in Kuwait mentioned above. However, people in Kuwait still marry foreigners no matter what. Bottom line is that Kuwaiti newspapers put the spotlight on every proposal under study, whether they see light or not. Don't believe everything printed on newspapers until they are official. Until now, they are yesterday's news = no value.

  6. there was an article in the press a few days back stating some divorce rate figures in kuwait, the figures were 44% if i am not mistaken so the fact is that marriage ain't working between kuwaitis so may be they should look outside for a change? why not?

  7. Regardless of the divorce rate, the government cannot prevent marriages (refusal of authentication) this is unconstitutional. The government can approach this issue by not providing the marriage grant and so on, as an obstacle to foreign marriage. But this.. come on!!!

  9. Hi Joe :D ~ I can't say much about that subject because the divorce rate in the US is even higher. American's usually marry for love but we still end up in divorce. I feel that higher divorce rates happen when women have the freedom to actually divorce their former Prince that turns out to be an ahole.

  13. yep. i can understand the high divorce rate in the states especially in a modern and progressive society, but in our part of the world, these are rather high figures, and the reasons for divorce are completely different. in a closed society marriage is like a scratch & win card as there is no "former prince" to begin with (society at large) - you either hit the jackpot or you don't, now what are the chance for a jackpot? legally i agree that the goverment should not interfere in such a personal decision, come on!
