Cooking 101: Expat and the City gets an F

Burnt sausage

Burnt biscuits

How hard could it be? I mean the sausage was packaged and precooked. The directions said all I had to do was brown it for a few minutes in a pan. The biscuits...packaged and frozen. All I had to do was heat up the oven and cook them for so many minutes. It looked easy this morning but then again Mrs. "I" always said I would never win a man over with my cooking. Darn it!!! I'm so mad at myself. :( Uh!!! The disappointment!

Some of the other blogs post lovely pictures of their cooking masterpieces. I guess it's just not in the cards for me. I used to think it was cute and not a big deal about my lack of cooking skills.  Now that I'm on my own it stinks! I'm still going to keep on trying and never give up. Even if I burn my house down. This isn’t funny because I’ve come close a few times.  I have the Kuwaiti emergency number on speed dial.

I love to cook and I love to eat! I can bake certain things really well.  There are a few things I can actually cook well if I don't get distracted! The thing is that I can't cook most things very well. It's hard to admit but I actually suck at cooking most things. I suck BIG time! Thank goodness almost every restaurant in Kuwait delivers to your front door. If this weren’t the case I would have starved by now!

  1. Don't lose sleep over this, Expat. I had the same problem, burning steaks, overcooking rice, & overstuffing things. However, persistence paid off and now I can bake mini pizzas, crepes, apple crumble and English breakfast from scratch. We all had rookie mistakes. Still, I'd love to cook some Kuwaiti dishes, but I guess I need a couple of years to learn how to do so.

  4. I blame it on the ovens. I can't cook anything without having to turn the heat up then down and keep checking on it. That and the fact I can't find most of the ingredients they have on Food Network so I just sit, watch and wish I could have some of what they're cooking.

  6. Wow, um..... I agree about the oven part, it can be the reason for it; also distraction can play a part in it too!
